Abstract
The essay compares Scruton’s position with the father of British conservatism, Edmund Burke, by finding grafts with the Enlightenment rationalism of Kantian derivation. To define Roger Scruton’s thought as conservatism means to describe a complex, all-encompassing theory, which winds from philosophical reflection towards different political orientations and then translates into everyday living practices. His is a dialectical theory. A theory that is based on empirical-phenomenological assumptions, attentive to the everyday, to the customary, to the normal. The question remains open as to the founding role of a metaphysical approach also in terms of a conservative political theory.
Keywords: Scruton, Conservatism, Enlightment, Progressivism, Metaphysics.
