Antonio Gramsci was an all-round intellectual. In his life as a thinker there are also incisive reflections on sport, contrary to what is maintained by a certain historiography, especially Anglo-Saxon, according to which the interest of Gramsci for sport would have been «close to nill». A following of fans in Italy numerically important already at the beginning of the ‘900 and that, in the period between the two wars, would focus mainly on football, elected by the regime of Mussolini to national sport. Football, and its confrontation with the game of cards, specifically with the scopone, is the subject of an acute systematization that appeared on «L’Avanti» in 1918, behind which lies an interesting analysis of the paradigms of liberty and democracy.
