Abstract
The development and effects of Protestant ethics are investigated in its historical progress through the examination of Lutheran thought and its influences. From the first recognition of Lutheranism with the peace of Augsburg to the subsequent affirmation of Protestant thought with the peace of Westphalia of 1648, the correlation between the development of capitalism and the Calvinist expansion with its work ethic is clarified. Investigating the relationship between the religious component, economic success and national identity we move on to analyse the structure of the identity of the United States of America in which for centuries the majority culture was the Anglo-Protestant one and, that today, is being challenged by Mexican Catholic immigration, not very inclined to assimilation.

Keywords: Lutheranism, Calvinism, Hussitism, American identity, Hispanization.
